What are your writing goals*?

What are your writing goals? Do you want to be a professional? To make a living with your writing? To write one book and never do so again? To journal every day, but never let anyone see it? Think about that a minute. 

I don’t actually care about your answer.

What I do care about is mine. The reason is, you can’t physically have something unless you first figure out what it is you want and picture yourself with it. Only you can know what you want and to build the image in your mind. That’s the only way you can hope to see it show up in your life. 

Getting clear about your writing goals (and, quite frankly, your life goals), is the first step towards making them a reality. For me, that means making a living as a writer (both fiction and nonfiction), a speaker, an editor, and a coach. Basically, to do the work every day. For you, that’s probably entirely different. 

The point is to figure out what you want and why

Your ‘why’ is the thing that will keep you going when all seems lost. It’s your motivation, the reason you are doing this work, and it’s unique to you. If you aren’t first clear about what you want and why you want it, you’ll never be able to picture yourself with it and will, therefore, never see it come into your life. 

If you don’t believe you can have the things you desire, you’re right. If you do, you’ll find a way to make it happen. 

Figure out what you want. Then, get emotionally involved with that thing. Why do you want it? What will it mean for you as a person? How will your life be better once you have it? 

For example, if you want to make money, your ‘what’ is to make X amount of dollars. Your ‘why’ is what you will do with the money: travel the world, donate to your favorite charity, buy a new car, etc.  

Whatever it is you want, the ‘why’ will help you live in the reality that it’s already yours. That’s what will keep your attention on doing the things necessary to have it. So figure out what you want and why. The ‘how’ will work itself out.
