Are you a writer struggling to learn how to tell a story that works?
Do you want to finish the project you said you’d start ages ago? Do you want to be able to tell stories for a living? More importantly, do you want readers to keep reading your stories and to share them with everyone they know?
But, how exactly do you turn that jumble of words into a novel or memoir that makes sense and delivers on the promises you make?
That’s where The Story Grid and I come in.
I’ll help you…
- Make sure your idea will be enough to fill a whole novel
- Learn to write a scene that keeps your readers hooked
- Figure out what’s missing from your novel and why it “doesn’t work”
- Give you actionable advice unlike many others who will tell you something vague like “show, don’t tell”
- Pay off your beginning hook with plot twists that readers won’t see coming
- Create characters that feel real
- Write books that keep readers reading and sharing with their friends
- Finish the book you’ve always wanted to write
How do I make books better?
No matter where you start, I’m going to help you improve your work. I’m not here to tell you your novel is perfect or the worst thing ever. Instead, I’ll work with you to help you learn to tell your stories better. The process is designed to help you at whatever level you need: to analyze an idea, a scene, a manuscript, or to work together week-by-week to keep you writing. You’ll get laser-focused advice and an analytical view into the kind of story you’re trying to tell. And, we’ll get you into the Professional Mindset, ready to fight Resistance.

I have been studying stories and writing for the past 3 and a half years and have trained directly under an editor (Shawn Coyne) with over 25 years of experience. The group of Story Grid Editors offer each other advice and expertise on a daily basis and have a line of communication to Shawn should we need it. I have gotten a couple short pieces published and am a writer myself so I know the struggles you face firsthand. Additionally, I’m working on a Story Grid Guide to The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness using the tools from The Story Grid. I also attended Robert McKee’s Story Seminar. Finally, I have intensely studied other craft guides such as Story Engineering, Writing Fiction, Story, and Plot and Structure and will continue to do so to improve my craft and services.
